How to choose image dimensions for a website

There is no single ideal width for every website image. A logo, full-width feature photograph, article thumbnail, and zoomable product image all occupy different spaces and serve different tasks.

Measure the placement

Start with the widest normal display area for the image and the aspect ratio the layout expects. Note whether the design crops the image to fit or shows the entire file. This prevents a carefully composed export from losing its subject inside a fixed box.

Check both narrow and wide layouts. A landscape image with a subject at the edge may work on a desktop but fail in a centered mobile crop. Choose a crop deliberately for important placements.

Preserve detail where it matters

A product inspection image may need more detail than a decorative background. A diagram with labels needs enough resolution for the labels to remain legible, or a separate text version when visual scaling is insufficient.

Keep a master export and create delivery copies from it. Avoid using a tiny thumbnail as the source for a larger placement. Enlarging it changes the dimensions but cannot recreate missing detail.

Review delivery, not just the media library

A responsive site can serve different image sizes for different layouts. Ask your developer or inspect the published page to confirm that an appropriate image is delivered, rather than merely displayed smaller with styling.

PixelRank’s paid WebP export caps the longest side at 1,920 pixels. That suits many website placements, but it is not a universal specification for print, specialist zoom views, or every high-density display. Select the final export based on the actual use.

WORKED EXAMPLE

A practical comparison

Before
Upload the same camera original into every placement
Better approach
Prepare a landscape feature crop and a separate square card crop

Different layout slots can require different compositions even when they share a source photograph.
