Descriptive filenames and accurate alt text are the two image signals search engines actually document. They are also the two nobody has time to write by hand across a few hundred files. This does the first draft.
They are not interchangeable and they are not the same audience. The filename is a short, hyphenated, lowercase description that helps search engines and humans identify the file and survives being downloaded, moved, or shared. The alt text is a sentence for someone who cannot see the image, and it is a legal accessibility requirement in many contexts.
Writing them together is more accurate than writing them apart, because both come from the same look at the same picture. Writing them apart is how you end up with a file called red-dress.jpg carrying alt text about a blue one.
The context field takes your target keywords and the model is instructed to work them in naturally where they genuinely describe the image — and to leave them out where they do not. Stuffing a filename with terms is an old tactic that reads badly to people and has not worked for a long time.
The useful mental model: write the name you would want to see in a search result, then check that it is true of the picture. If both hold, it is a good filename.
