How to rename screenshots

1. Upload the screenshots. PNG is what most systems produce, and it is fully supported, as are JPG and WebP up to 5 MB.
2. Say what the product is. Naming the application or the feature in the context field sharpens the result considerably, because interface screenshots are dense and ambiguous without it.
3. Review and download. You get a filename plus alt text, which matters more for screenshots than for almost any other image type.

Why screenshots go stale faster than photos

A photo of a chair is still a chair next year. A screenshot is tied to a version of an interface, and when the interface changes you need to find and replace every shot of the old one. With timestamp filenames the only way to do that is to open them all.

Named by content, the same job becomes a search. Every screenshot of the billing settings screen is findable by the words "billing settings", which is how you were thinking about it in the first place.

Reading text inside an interface

Screenshots are mostly text, and the model reads what is legible — headings, labels, button text, error messages — and uses it to name the file. A dialog reading "Your card was declined" is far more likely to become checkout-error-invalid-card.png than untitled-3.png.

Text inside an image is treated strictly as description. If a screenshot happens to contain words that look like commands, they are described, not followed. That matters when you are processing screenshots from users or from the open web.

Documentation and accessibility

A screenshot with no alt text is a blank space to anyone using a screen reader, and in technical documentation the screenshot is often carrying the instruction. Getting a usable draft description alongside the filename closes a gap that most teams know about and few have time to fix.

Review still matters here more than elsewhere. The model describes what is on screen; only you know whether this particular shot is illustrating the happy path or the error state, and the alt text should say which.

Can it read the text in my screenshots?

It reads text that is legible at the resolution you upload — headings, labels, buttons, and error messages. Very small or low-contrast text may be missed, so check the result on dense interfaces.

How do I stop my computer naming screenshots with a timestamp?

On macOS you can change the prefix with the screencapture command, and on Windows the Snipping Tool lets you set a save name, but neither can describe content. That is the part this tool handles.

Are screenshots with sensitive data safe to upload?

Treat them as you would any upload: images are processed off your machine. Redact credentials, customer records, or anything you do not have permission to share before uploading. Our privacy policy names every processor involved.
