Image filename vs alt text vs caption: what goes where?

Image editors often present several text fields next to the same photograph. They are not interchangeable. Use each field for its actual job rather than copying one string into every box.

The filename identifies the asset

Think of the filename as a label for the file in your publishing workflow. It should distinguish the image from other assets without requiring a full sentence. A product name and a view are often enough.

The extension describes the actual format. Keep it consistent with the exported file, and maintain a record of the old name if other people still work with the source collection.

Alt text depends on placement

Alternative text communicates an image’s information or function when it cannot be seen. The same photo can need different wording in a product listing and in a detailed guide because the reason for including it has changed.

A generated image title is an editorial suggestion. It is not the page’s SEO title, and entering text in a media-library title field does not guarantee that the theme will use it as accessible alternative text. Check the published markup.

Captions add visible context

Use a caption for information you want everyone to read near the image: a location, date, attribution, explanation, or observation. A caption can discuss the significance of a photograph while the alt text describes the relevant visible content.

When transferring PixelRank’s CSV into your website, map each column deliberately. Do a one-image trial before a bulk import. Verify the filename, alt attribute, visible caption, and any displayed title separately so an import mismatch does not spread across the library.

WORKED EXAMPLE

A practical comparison

Before
One phrase pasted into every image field
Better approach
Filename: oak-desk-drawer-detail.jpg · Alt: Open drawer showing the desk’s interior compartments

A caption could explain the organization options if that information belongs in the visible page copy.

Illustrative example, not a customer result.
