Keep the original filename
Retain a column that identifies the source asset. Without it, an editor may receive a folder of newly named images and a spreadsheet with no reliable way to match them. Include the destination page in your working copy when a file appears in several places.
PixelRank exports original name, proposed filename, alt text, title, description, width, and height. Review which of those fields your website can import and which require manual entry.
Map fields deliberately
A media title is not necessarily an alt attribute. A description field may remain internal or may become visible copy depending on the publishing system. Confirm the meaning of each destination field before mapping columns.
Import one image first. Open its published page and check the rendered alt text, visible caption, file address, and image quality. Only then repeat the mapping for the rest of the collection.
Record exceptions and ownership
Add review status and owner columns to the working spreadsheet. Mark unresolved product details, unclear images, and decorative placements so they cannot be mistaken for approved content.
Keep the approved CSV with the downloaded batch. If the site later changes a filename or creates transformed image URLs, update the mapping or keep a publishing log. This makes future audits more reliable than searching through several folders called final.
A practical comparison
- Before
- A folder of exports with no record of the camera filenames
- Better approach
- original → filename → destination page → approved alt text → status
The mapping is the central record; the CSV column names can be adapted to your publishing system.
