Image SEO for photography portfolios

A portfolio image is both evidence of your work and part of the site experience. Prepare it so visitors can understand the project and inspect the visual quality without struggling through a slow or confusing gallery.

Use project context responsibly

Give each image a clear project or subject label and a distinction such as location within the set or viewpoint. Keep client names and precise locations out of public metadata when they are not approved for publication.

Avoid forcing every photograph into the same commercial phrase. A portfolio can include many subjects, and the useful context belongs in the project introduction and captions as well as in individual image descriptions.

Balance composition and delivery

Choose the crop deliberately. Automated thumbnail crops may cut off a face or a key compositional element, so review grid cards as well as full gallery views. Keep the master files separate from website exports.

Inspect compression in gradients, skin tones, fine textures, and shadow detail. An export that looks fine as a small grid tile may be unsuitable for the larger project page. Test both placements.

Write descriptions that fit the work

Describe the relevant visible subject without inventing a story about the people in the photograph. If a project has verified context that matters to readers, explain it in the page copy.

PixelRank can help organize exports and draft descriptions, but it does not replace your review of aesthetic quality, client permissions, or project context. Keep approved metadata alongside the delivery files so later portfolio revisions remain consistent.

A project label and visible subject can distinguish the image without exposing private client information.
