An e-commerce image naming convention that scales

A useful catalog naming convention supports both people and product records. It needs enough structure to keep variants together without making filenames so dense that only one person can interpret them.

Choose a stable product anchor

Use a confirmed product name or a stable internal identifier that your team can map back to a record. Do not build the convention around a temporary promotion or a category that frequently changes.

Decide how the team will express variants and views before a large shoot. A small vocabulary such as front, back, side, detail, and packaging is easier to apply consistently than a new phrase for every photographer.

Separate customer-facing names from internal tracking

Your internal record can hold the shoot date, photographer, rights information, and source path. A public filename does not need to carry all of that information. Keep sensitive supplier details and internal campaign notes out of exported names.

When a platform changes the file URL after upload, retain your own mapping rather than assuming the public address will always preserve the original filename. Test the actual workflow with one product.

Make review part of the import

Group images by product and verify that every view belongs to the correct variant. Check for repeated names, missing views, and inconsistent extension changes. Save approved filenames beside the product identifiers.

For an ongoing catalog, document a few accepted examples and one exception process. An editor should know what to do with a bundle, a configurable product, or a replacement photograph without inventing a new naming system.
